In 2021, the BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal with St Martin-in-the-Fields aired on Sunday the 5th of December.

For more than 95 years, St Martin-in-the-Fields has supported people to take the next step towards a safe place to live, and a more secure future. Our 2021 BBC Radio 4 Christmas Appeal celebrates the promise and potential of The Next Step, as well as highlighting the ongoing challenges putting even more people at risk of homelessness.

The devastating impacts of the pandemic have left more people than ever at risk of homelessness. Vital support services have been pushed to breaking point, and thousands of people have been left vulnerable, losing their homes, jobs and stability.

As the economic impacts of the pandemic are still being felt across the UK, we’re all facing the challenges of how to take the next step into the new year. This Christmas, we’re asking our supporters to help more people get the grant, the careers advice or the health support they need to take their own life-changing next step to a safer, more stable future.

The number of people experiencing homelessness has risen dramatically over the past decade, with an estimated 200,000 people living without the security of a home in 2020.

The devastating impacts of the pandemic have added huge additional pressure to support services, putting more people at risk of losing their homes and jobs, and leaving many without the vital support they need for their physical and mental health.

As a result, the support offered by St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity is more vital than ever. Across the UK, our Vicar’s Relief Fund (VRF) grants provide quick emergency solutions so that people at risk of homelessness can put down a deposit on a home or prevent eviction. In London, The Connection offers essential support for people experiencing street homelessness, as well as long-term advice and welfare services for support with careers, finances, health and wellbeing.

This year’s Radio 4 Christmas Appeal with St Martins-in-the-Fields is called The Next Step because that’s exactly what we can come together to provide. As we all embark on the next step into the new year and, hopefully, out of the pandemic, every donation could support someone experiencing homelessness to take their own next step towards the safety and security of home.
