Her new home gave Amma back her independence, and she was able to start looking for work again.

Amma* came in to contact with Victim Support as she had been a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her now ex-partner. As is common, her partner not only inflicted physical violence, but also worked to isolate her from any networks she had. This control he exerted over her eventually led to her leaving her job, also making Amma financially dependent on him.

Thankfully, Amma was able to leave her partner, and received support from Victim Support when she did, to recover from both the physical and financial abuse. As part of this, Amma’s support worker, Denise*, applied for a grant from the Vicar’s Relief Fund on her behalf. This grant covered Amma’s rent in advance for a new flat.

Being able to move was so important for Amma’s recovery. Her ex-partner no longer knew where she lived, which protected her physical safety and made it possible for Amma to stop worrying about him turning up at her home. It also stopped him from vandalising her home, which he had been known to do – preventing any issues between Amma and her landlord.

Her new home gave Amma back her independence, and she was able to start looking for work again. This, in turn, gave her financial stability and the chance to expand her networks after being so isolated.

This fresh start also improved Amma’s mental health. Prior to moving she was really struggling with the impacts of the ongoing abuse, and had even had suicidal thoughts. Her new safety, freedom and independence have had a hugely positive impact on Amma’s mental health, so much so that she no longer requires help from Victim Support.

With help from Denise, and the supporters of St Martin-in-the-Fields Charity, Amma was able to find a safe new home – this was crucial to ensuring she could start a new chapter in life.
